What is Galentine’s Day? The Budget Guide

galentine's day

When we had to choose some famous faces to contribute quotes for a Valentine’s Day Boxes of Fortune series, there were plenty in the running, waxing lyrical about romantic love. But what about the other love that makes life living?

Enter: Galentine’s Day.

Galentine’s Day was created by Leslie Knope during an episode of Parks and Recreation (e16 s2). Leslie Knope gathered all her best girl friends around her at a restaurant, to celebrate the love of a good woman. She gave them each a portrait of themselves made from crushed up bottles of their favourite fizzy drink, and a 5,000 word document explaining just why they were so amazing.

But never fear if you’ve failed to collect the requisite number of fizzy drink bottles to pull off a good mosaic portrait – here’s some alternative ways to celebrate your gals:

  • Lending stuff – for the ultimate galentine’s gift, make it something you haven’t worn yet. That’s the kind of move that can be restricted to but once a year – you’re not going for a sainthood, after all.
  • Finding out stuff – it’s too easy for the internet to link your innocent crushing internet stalking to the person that does it. For True Friend Points, let your mate use your LinkedIn account to check out the job progression of that crush.
  • Loyalty cards – got a full one? Make the ultimate sacrifice, and let her have that tenth bikini wax for free.
  • Discount cards – seeing as how your Museum Membership Card hasn’t seen the light of day since the dinosaurs were legit walking the earth, you could probably afford to lend it to your mate for a month. She gets all the excitement of going to exhibitions for free for the exact amount of time that it takes for the card to lose its shine and to be relegated to the back of the wallet.
  • Passwords – we’ve said it once, we’ll say it again – friends don’t let friends needlessly duplicate Netflix accounts.
  • Babysitting/dogsitting/parentsitting/siblingsitting – No matter what your friend’s stage of life, there is guaranteed to be a time when she would like to palm her responsibilities onto someone else.

Of course, if you want to say it in style, we’d recommend our own Galentine’s Day Box of Fortune. Your mate will receive a mysterious box, inside which is nestled a cute-as-all-holy chinese takeaway box, and a postcard sized gift card with your message printed on to the back. Once she opens the takeaway container she’ll find a fortune cookie with some Galentine’s Day appropriate words of wisdom, namely:

Hoes before bros. Uteruses before duderuses. Ovaries before brovaries”

Not only that, but there’s an emoji heart eyes temporary tattoo as well. Basically, everything she’ll ever need to know how much you love her.

Still to come: the ultimate super-lux way of celebrating Galentine’s Day (even more so than this).
